Cabayogan Women Loom Weavers Association
The Cabayogan Women Loomweavers Association in Iloilo consists of 22 members, ranging from 27 to 70 years old, dedicated to crafting various hablon products. Hablon, derived from the Hiligaynon word "habol" meaning "to weave," entails handloom weaving from Iloilo using fibers like abaca, piña, and cotton. In Cabayogan, this rich tradition of weaving has been handed down through generations, fostering a deep-rooted passion for the craft among today's youth. Both young and old members eagerly embrace the art of weaving, recognizing its significance in cultural preservation and personal empowerment.
The association was established on October 10, 2010 and with support from external organizations, the association received financial aid to build a weaving center, access materials, and undergo free weaving training. Elda Baldon, the association's president and a mother of four, is a seasoned weaver whose childhood memories of her mother's weaving instilled in her a sense of empowerment. Witnessing weaving which not only provides sustenance but also creates remarkable works of art fueled her dedication to preserving hablon as a cherished heritage worth passing on.
