The story behind Anchin and Kiyohime chronicles a monk's journey to the famed sanctuary of Kumano Hongu, where he finds love with the daughter of a manor official, Kiyohime.
Despite her feelings for the handsome monk, he ultimately rejects her advances, causing her to transform into a fierce serpent/dragon. She relentlessly pursues him, leading to a dramatic finale at Dojo-ji Temple, where she coils around the bell and unleashes her fiery wrath, melting it and the monk hiding inside.
